Leaf Peeping and Good Company

Leaf peeping: is an informal term, commonly used in the United States, for people who travel to view and photograph the fall foliage.- Wikipedia

A few weeks ago DFH and I spent a weekend in the beautiful Adirondacks visiting my grandparents.  It happened to be prime "leaf peeping" season, and the Adirondack Mountains are a prime location to see gorgeous fall foliage.

Unfortunately the weather was not on our side that weekend, but we had a wonderful time with my grandparents, shopping, drinking, eating, having great conversation, and exploring the Adirondacks the best we could with the poor weather:

It's Carving Time!

For some reason I feel like October has been so busy!  DFH and I almost need to calendar in time to see each other with all of our plans.  We have been looking forward to carving pumpkins/ baking the seeds YUM!!! So we "calendared" carving night to be on Monday haha!

Last year we carved collegiate pumpkins:

DFH carved West Virginia University

I carved Elon ( including the Phoenix mascot haha!)

We are trying to decide what to carve this year, I have always thought it would be funny to do the vomiting pumpkin surrounded by empty beer cans/liquor bottles:

I found some amazing carving ideas on Pinterest:

1st Craft Night and our DIY project

Last week a few of my "crafty" friends and I got together for the first, of hopefully many craft nights.  The wonderful KW hosted and selected the first craft.
I wish I took a picture of the food, because KW made us delicious apps and homemade pizza, and of course a little wine added to the fun.

KW selected a coffee filter wreath and we all had so much fun making it.

The final product!!!

All you need is the following:

1. Flat bottomed Coffee Filters ( a pack of 200 is more than enough):  We chose natural colors for fall, but KW had also made a wreath with white coffee filters, which looked great too.

2. Hot glue gun and glue sticks

3.  A piece of cardboard

4.  Ribbon

Start by folding the coffee filters like a fan all the way across and then fold then in half one more time.

I don't have a picture of the cardboard step, but cut a circle as seen above out of cardboard the size and width of the wreath you want.  We used a large paper plate to trace as a base, and it was about a 1 inch width across.

Next poke two holes about an inch apart in the cardboard and run a piece a ribbon through each side to form a ribbon loop to hang your wreath.  ( you can see the back of the tied ribbon knots at the bottom part of the wreath).  Knot each side so the ribbon loop stays in place.

Now start hot gluing the folded up filters around the outer and inner circle of your wreath base.  if you look closely you can see we glued the bottom of the filter over so that they would not stick out.

Continue going around the inner and outer sections of the base and stick filters in between until your wreath is full.
( Sorry I didn't document all the steps haha)

Here are some of our wreathes

Feel free to add a ribbon either above or on the side of the wreath.  We attached the ribbon seen above with wire, so that we can switch the color ribbon out for different holidays or seasons.

Halloween Costumes

I love Halloween, especially the costumes.  I love thinking of unique and original costume ideas that are fun DIY projects.  Luckily in law school we had a Halloween costume party every year so there was always a costume party to plan for, since we've graduated we've made sure we've had a party to attend to wear our costumes.

Here are some of my costumes over the years:

Happy Fall!!

I am not really a huge sweets person, but I saw these pumpkin cupcakes on Pinterest and had to make them for an event I attended a few weeks ago!

I just used confetti cake mix for the cupcakes and then used food coloring to color the icing.  I found green apple sour candies for the stem.

  Happy Friday xoxo

Recipe Organization

How many times have you found a recipe in a magazine or on a blog that sounds amazing, but then you either leave it in the magazine and forget about it  or print it out and throw it in some drawer and it is never seen again?  I did this constantly, and would never be able to find the recipes when I wanted to try them.

My mom is one of the most creative and organized people I know, and she came up with a fabulous recipe organization idea, which I stole from her about a year ago and it is such a great way to keep your magazine/blog/Internet/handwritten  recipes organized and easy to find.

All you need is the following:

1. Three ring binder
2. sheet protectors
3. three ring binder tabs

All items can be purchased at an office goods store such as Office Depot or Staples
It is such an easy, but genius idea ( Thanks Mom!)

Start by placing sheet protectors into the three ring binder and then label the different tabs with your different "cook book" categories.   I believe right now I have a section labeled for:  Appetizers, Entrees, Side Dishes, Soups, Desserts, Drinks, Dressings/Marinades, and then a section for table decorating ideas.
Obviously you can make any categories you want!

Then start slipping your favorite recipes into the sheet protectors!!

It is so easy to open the binder to add more recipes or move them around to different sections.   For example, I started with one binder total and now I'm moving on to three binders, as I keep adding more recipes and more categories.  My mom has one full binder for almost each category.
Here is a close up of the sheet protectors if you are not familiar.  The top is open so you can slip your favorite recipes in the protector.

It is such a great way to keep print outs/magazine pages and handwritten recipes organized.   Plus it is fun to look through them like your personalized recipe book.  The best part is if you try a recipe and hate it your can just take it out of your collection   :)

I also just started a new binder for my "to do" craft list/pinterest finds!!

Happy Thursday xoxo
